Poisoning still remains a public health problem in the United States. Unintentional poisoning deaths are the #1 cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 18-36 months and the second leading cause of injury-related deaths for U. S. adults. People encounter poisonous and toxic substances every day in their homes, communities, and work environments.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) in conjunction with the federal Health and human Services agency, reports that $10-$12 are saved each year for every $1 spent on poison center services. Using the IPC has prevented thousands of unnecessary trips to hospital emergency departments and physician offices, saving an estimated $28.3 million annually in health care costs in Illinois.

While treatment and consultation from the IL Poison Center is offered as a free service, the expertise to handle poison emergencies around the clock, 365 days a year and support a vibrant intervention/ prevention outreach program is costly. The IPC, a non-government regulated non-profit 501(C)(3) agency, depends on the generous contributions received from private and public sources like yourself. Your financial assistance is needed to help us achieve our mission in serving the 13.4 million residents of Illinois. Last year, the IPC handled more than 100,000 calls from individuals, healthcare and emergency services professionals that included incidents of lead poisoning, carbon monoxide, medication errors and substance abuse.
