Toxicity Level:  Minimally toxic

Also Known As:  diaper rash cream/ointment, Desitin®, Triple Paste®, Boudreauxs Butt Paste®, Balmex®, others

What It Is:  Most diaper rash creams contain zinc oxide as a skin protectant.  Some diaper rash products also contain Vitamins (such as A, D and E) and emollient ingredients such as petrolatum, mineral oil and cod liver oil.

Toxicity:  Both zinc oxide and the inactive ingredients in diaper rash cream are minimally toxic. Ingestion of a mouthful or less is expected to cause a mild laxative effect at worst.

Possible Symptoms of Overdose/Poisoning:  Loose stools

What You Should Do:  Give the child a few sips of water.  Observe for symptoms.  Call the IPC if the symptoms occur.

You should be concerned if your child experiences these symptoms: vomiting (more than once), persistent/continued diarrhea, choking.  Call your local Poison Center right away at 1-800-222-1222.

Other Important Info:  Prescription medication creams are sometimes used to treat severe diaper rash.  These creams contain different ingredients than the over the counter/zinc oxide creams.
