Ink is Minimally toxic .

If your child swallowed ink, give them a few sips of water and monitor for symptoms like vomiting or an upset stomach.

If your child swallowed printer ink or stamp-pad ink, call IPC at 1-800-222-1222.

What to know: Ink

  • Ink is found in gel pens, permanent markers, dry erase board markers, highlighters, felt tip pens and more.
  • Ink can stain skin. Do not attempt to use chemicals or harsh cleaning products to remove ink stains from your child's skin.

Toxicity Level

What are toxicity levels?

My child ate ink. Is ink toxic? 

Ink is minimally toxic and can cause a mild upset stomach or stained skin/tongue if ingested. Avoid harsh scrubbing or chemical cleaners on the skin. Any stains should wear off in several days.

Computer printer cartridges and stamp-pad inks usually contain a larger amount of ink and/or additional ingredients. If your child swallowed printer ink or stamp-pad ink, call IPC at 1-800-222-1222.

Symptoms of Poisoning

If your child swallowed ink, give them a few sips of water and watch for vomiting and an upset stomach. If they develop these symptoms, call IPC at 1-800-222-1222.

Eye Exposure

  • Ink may cause irritation if exposed to eyes.   

  • If your child got ink in their eyes, rinse by pouring clean, lukewarm water across the affected eye(s) for 15 minutes.
