Graphite, Pencils
Usually Nontoxic
Pencil lead is usually nontoxic. If your child begins vomiting after eating pencil lead, call IPC at 1-800-222-1222.
Eating graphite or pencil material is unlikely to cause any symptoms. However, pencil lead is a choking hazard. If your child is choking, call 911.
Give your child a few sips of water. Any skin stains should wash off with soap and water. If your child begins vomiting, call IPC at 1-800-222-1222.
Pencil Lead is actually graphite, a minimally-toxic carbon-based substance. Pencils do not contain the metal lead.
Graphite and other components of a pencil are minimally toxic when swallowed or drawn onto the skin. If a pencil tip breaks or punctures the skin, contact IPC at 1-800-222-1222 or the child’s pediatrician for medical advice regarding the puncture injury.
